Martha Puig Named VP of ARPCO Transport Services – August 2014

An Announcement from the President of ARPCO Transport Services:

 

Martha Puig came to work for ARPCO immediately after graduating with her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of North Texas in Denton. For the past 4 years Martha has managed the administrative portion of our business as my executive assistant – this area encompasses the carrier vetting dept, the accounts receivable and payables, vendors, credit, HR, IT, payroll, and staffing. Her leadership style, which is based on a lead by example approach, has encouraged those around her to adopt a “Yes, we can” attitude. Martha has a willingness to get involved with team projects, as well as her personal projects, to get the job done. We are experiencing growth in every area of our business due, in part, to Martha’s work ethic. She brings a sense of positive urgency and energy to the work place that ensures that deadlines are met and employees and customers alike are kept satisfied. The next area of growth for Martha in the business will be direct involvement with the sales and operations floor. I believe that Martha will continue to be a great asset to our company as we begin our 26th year in business.

The Freight Broker Bond – Why ARPCO Increased Our Bond Early

Beginning October 1st, Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century (MAP-21), Section 32915, required “anyone acting as a broker or a freight forwarder and subject to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) jurisdiction, including motor carriers, to register and obtain broker or freight forwarder authority from FMCSA.” So, whether you are a full-time freight broker, freight forwarder, or just a small trucking company that occasionally brokers out a load or two (with the exception of dealing with an interlining service)  the FMCSA now mandates that you have designated broker authority. To receive this authority, brokers and forwarders are required to file a surety bond or trust fund agreement with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to receive a freight broker’s license.

So, with greater regulation comes greater responsibility — financial responsibility that it. The bond amount also increased from $10,000.00 to $75.000.00.

Being Green is the “SmartWay!”

Did you know there is a government agency specially designed to promote fuel-efficiency and promote green initiatives in an effort to reduce our carbon footprint in the trucking industry? There is! It is called SmartWay and is defined by the EPA website as “a public/private collaboration between the USEPA and the freight transportation industry that helps freight shippers, carriers, and logistics companies improve fuel-efficiency and save money.” The goal is to reduce inefficiencies, reduce carbon emissions through green initiatives, and provide information to the transportation industry and the public.

ARPCO Transport Services is proud to announce that we have been approved, yet again, as a 2013 member in good standing of SmartWay! This makes three consecutive years of SmartWay Partnership for ARPCO!

Twenty-Five Years and a Purple Suitcase

If you drive down highway 114 in Grapevine, Texas, between Main Street and Texan Trail, you will see the big blue ARPCO letters and large bay windows from our office suite located in the warehouse district by DFW airport. But it didn’t always used to be that way.

There was a time when ARPCO was housed in Albert Puig’s home office with a row of gray filing cabinets, a rolodex, and a single 8 line telephone with blinking light-up buttons that has been ringing with the same telephone number that it has had for 25 years.

Why Is Their Grass Greener?

It’s summer. The season of barbeques, vacations, sizzling days, cool nights, and green…envy?

We are all guilty of wanting the perfect swimsuit body, the fancier car, the better job, or the happier family. We fantasize what it would be like and how improved the quality of life would become – “I could be happy IF…”.

As they say, “The grass is always greener on the other side” and regardless of the season we will find ourselves wishing that we were on another side of the fence feeling the lush greenery around our toes.

But, have you ever stopped and asked yourself, “Why isn’t my grass greener? Why does my grass lack luster?”

Benefits of a Carrier Development Department

On Monday I sat in for our Carrier Development Department since our normal representative was out. I have been filling in over the lunch hour for a couple of months now, so I am not a completely untrained monkey, but there is a definite difference between one hour in the CDD seat and eight hours in the CDD seat. (Oh yes, I fill other seats than the designated Media Misfit at ARPCO.)

What I probably looked like at the end of the day.

I’m exaggerating of course. All-in-all the day went very smooth and I enjoyed interacting with our carriers, however; I have come away with a brighter appreciation for the very high qualification standard of approval of our carriers that ARPCO guarantees for every single shipment we facilitate. We want only the best, of the best, of the best!

So, what is carrier development?

 Carrier development is the approval process for using a truck driver’s [carrier] services. It is a qualification and screening process that guarantees only legitimate carriers with a proven record of compliance, safety, and reliability are hired to pickup and deliver freight.
