The New Hours of Service Rule: Impact on Truckers’ Finances, Numerical Fallacies and Common Sense Questions

Please enjoy this Guest Blog by Vicki Simons.

Mike and Vicki Simons provide real world tips [from their personal experience as truck drivers] that help professional truck drivers save hard-earned money and personal reporting about products and services for use on the road. Visit their website at

MAP-21 — the short title for the two-year transportation re-authorization bill entitled “Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act” — was signed into law in 2012. In part, it addresses an Hours of Service Study. In this article, I would like to do the following regarding the new Hours of Service rule:

  • Address its financial impact on truckers;
  • Present its two associated numerical fallacies; and
  • Ask a few common sense questions.

For reference purposes, the Hours of Service of Drivers Final Rule [Download PDF Version] was published in the Federal Register on December 27, 2011. The compliance date for the new Hours of Service regulation was July 1, 2013.

Why Is Their Grass Greener?

It’s summer. The season of barbeques, vacations, sizzling days, cool nights, and green…envy?

We are all guilty of wanting the perfect swimsuit body, the fancier car, the better job, or the happier family. We fantasize what it would be like and how improved the quality of life would become – “I could be happy IF…”.

As they say, “The grass is always greener on the other side” and regardless of the season we will find ourselves wishing that we were on another side of the fence feeling the lush greenery around our toes.

But, have you ever stopped and asked yourself, “Why isn’t my grass greener? Why does my grass lack luster?”

Benefits of a Carrier Development Department

On Monday I sat in for our Carrier Development Department since our normal representative was out. I have been filling in over the lunch hour for a couple of months now, so I am not a completely untrained monkey, but there is a definite difference between one hour in the CDD seat and eight hours in the CDD seat. (Oh yes, I fill other seats than the designated Media Misfit at ARPCO.)

What I probably looked like at the end of the day.

I’m exaggerating of course. All-in-all the day went very smooth and I enjoyed interacting with our carriers, however; I have come away with a brighter appreciation for the very high qualification standard of approval of our carriers that ARPCO guarantees for every single shipment we facilitate. We want only the best, of the best, of the best!

So, what is carrier development?

Carrier development is the approval process for using a truck driver’s [carrier] services. It is a qualification and screening process that guarantees only legitimate carriers with a proven record of compliance, safety, and reliability are hired to pickup and deliver freight.

Freight Brokers, MAP-21, and Ferris Bueller

“Brokers?… Brokers?… Brokers?…”

Have you ever seen Ferris Bueller’s Day Off? Well, if you have, read the above line again in Ben Stein’s voice and it will make a lot more sense, and garner a chuckle,  if you picture the very bored economics’ classroom scene in the movie (and if you haven’t seen the movie *tsk tsk*  go home, rent it, and watch for a great laugh. “You’re welcome” in advance. THEN, re-read the blog to also be a part of the “cool” chuckling crowd that got it in the first place.)

Anywho, down to business.

The Importance of Night Dispatch in Trucking

At ARPCO, we may not have Tom Bodett or a chain of Motel 6’s, but we can promise to keep a similar commitment to you.

At ARPCO we will keep the nightdispatch on for you.

Night Dispatch

Just kidding…we’ve updated our system.

We have a stated commitment on our website to work harder, longer, and smarter, today, tomorrow, and every day, leaving no stone unturned, to bring you quality service, added values, and cost savings on all your shipments.

The after-hours service is where the “work harder and longer” part comes into play.
